Valerie McWhorter is a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, residing and practicing in East Texas, who has a great passion for helping others. Valerie has an educational background in both psychology and counseling, along with nursing, having earned masters degrees in both. With her Masters of Science in Nursing, from Texas Tech University Health Science Center, Valerie specialized in psychiatric care, eventually becoming certified and licensed as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP). As a PMHNP Valerie does similar work to a psychiatrist; diagnosing, writing prescriptions, managing medications and providing therapy. She has worked in higher education, special education, as a Med-Surg nurse and charge nurse, and feels at home now as a PMHNP.
Valerie believes in collaborating with patients to provide holistic, patient-centered care. Valerie meets patients where they are in their journey toward wellness, accepting and joining with them to work towards their goals. Valerie uses a “least restrictive” mentality, encouraging only necessary medication to manage a patient’s care. Valerie looks at the big picture taking into account sleep, diet, exercise, life satisfaction, and spiritual well-being in relation to their psychological treatment.
Valerie is married to Will McWhorter, Professor of Computer Science at Northeast Texas Community College, with whom she has three beautiful children. Valerie was born in Chicago Heights, Illinois and grew up in Austin. After having attended A&M-Commerce and marrying, Valerie and her husband, Will, decided to settle in his hometown located in East Texas, Quitman. Valerie loves spending time with her family, volunteering, working out, reading, spending time in nature and taking time to be artistic and crafty.
